An LGBTQ-focused migrant support program in Boston has been halted after city officials said grant funds were not approved for the way they were being used.

The group OUTnewcomers announced it would stop its “Belonging Matters” initiative and return the grant money to the mayor’s office. The program had proposed offering migrants wellness-related benefits such as yoga classes, massages, gym memberships, and allowances of up to $500.

Dispute over funding use

City officials said the grant—worth $7,500—was intended for mental health support services, not for vouchers or lifestyle perks.

A spokesperson for the administration of Michelle Wu said no funds had been approved or distributed for the types of benefits described in the program proposal.

OUTnewcomers was one of 45 groups selected under a broader $200,000 initiative run through the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement to support LGBTQ communities.

Conflicting descriptions of the program

The “Belonging Matters” program initially advertised wellness offerings including:

  • Yoga, meditation, and breathwork
  • Gym memberships
  • Creative arts and peer support
  • Up to $250–$500 in “wellness allowances”

However, the organization later described the benefits as smaller vouchers—typically $50 or less—raising questions about inconsistencies in how the program was presented.

Program paused amid safety concerns

Even before returning the funds, OUTnewcomers said it had paused the initiative due to “security concerns,” citing threats directed at the organization.

Founder Sal Khan said the decision was difficult but necessary to protect staff and participants.

Bigger picture

The episode has sparked scrutiny over how the city allocates and monitors grants to community organizations—especially when programs involve politically sensitive issues like migration and public spending.

It also reflects the broader tension seen in many countries right now: how to balance support services for migrants with public accountability and clear guidelines on the use of taxpayer-funded programs.
