A Mexican migrant who was fatally shot by ICE agents in Houston this week was not the person officers had originally been seeking, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS said agents stopped a white van after believing its occupant resembled an individual with a final order of removal whom they had been surveilling. The man who was killed, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was later identified as someone else.
DHS account of the shooting
According to the agency, Salgado Araujo ignored commands to stop and attempted to use his vehicle to strike officers while trying to flee. An ICE agent then opened fire, claiming self-defense.
The officers involved were not wearing body cameras.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia said acting ICE Director David Venturella confirmed that agents had mistaken someone in the van for another individual they were seeking, though the agency has not disclosed that person’s identity.
Family disputes official narrative
Relatives say Salgado Araujo had lived in the United States for 35 years, was close to obtaining legal status, and had no criminal record. They describe him as a devoted father of three and a hardworking homebuilder.
His son, Ronaldo Salgado, said he wants his father to be remembered not for the circumstances of his death, but as a family man who believed in the value of hard work.
Investigations underway
The shooting is now under review by the DHS Office of Inspector General. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has also opened its own inquiry.
