Prime Video surprised fans of Fallout season 2 with an unexpected crossover moment when Jon Gries made a brief but memorable appearance alongside Walton Goggins, reuniting the two actors after their recent work together on HBO’s The White Lotus.

While the streamer had already announced new cast additions including Justin Theroux, Kumail Nanjiani and Macaulay Culkin, Gries’ involvement was deliberately kept under wraps. His cameo appears in the third episode of the new season, where he shares the screen with Goggins in a moment that longtime fans of The White Lotus quickly recognized.

Gries, 68, joins the post-apocalyptic drama as Biff, a weary and struggling soldier aligned with the New California Republic. His character crosses paths with the Ghoul, portrayed by Goggins, as the bounty hunter travels toward the Legion’s camp in an attempt to rescue Lucy, played by Ella Purnell. Biff is stationed at a deserted outpost with fellow soldier Rodriguez, portrayed by Barbara Eve Harris, who explains that the NCR has been out of contact for more than ten years.

Though their interaction is brief, the scene carries added significance due to the actors’ shared history on The White Lotus. In the show’s Thailand-set third season, Gries returned as Greg Hunt, the former partner of Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid, while Goggins joined the cast as Rick Hatchett, a con artist driven by a desire to avenge his father’s death.

Speaking with PEOPLE about the new season of Fallout, Goggins said casting Gries felt like a natural choice. He explained that he has known Gries for many years and that when the opportunity arose for a character like Biff, Gries immediately stood out as the ideal fit. According to Goggins, his longtime friend brought exactly the right energy and presence to the role.

Showrunner and executive producer Geneva Robertson-Dworet echoed that praise, describing Gries as an exceptionally warm and empathetic person. She said the creative team was drawn to him not only for his talent but for his ability to instantly connect with audiences. She explained that the role required someone viewers would immediately care about, and Gries embodied that quality perfectly. Robertson-Dworet added that the production was honored to have him join the cast, even in a small but impactful role.

For Goggins, the cameo also offered a chance to spend more time with a close friend after The White Lotus wrapped filming in Thailand. He noted that Fallout season 2 was shot afterward, giving them the opportunity to reunite under very different circumstances. Joking about the contrast between the two shows, Goggins said that while the environments were wildly different, both were equally hot — just in different ways.

Looking ahead to the broader arc of Fallout season 2, Goggins teased the continuing journey of the Ghoul as he travels with Lucy toward New Vegas. He described the season as a kind of post-apocalyptic road trip, one that begins exactly where the first season ended but with an important emotional shift.

According to Goggins, the Ghoul starts to see Lucy more clearly as a human being rather than just a companion of convenience. He said that he and Purnell spent a great deal of time discussing how their characters’ relationship would realistically evolve as they travel together for days on end in a harsh and unforgiving world.

New episodes of Fallout season 2 are released weekly on Wednesdays on Prime Video, with the season finale scheduled to air on Feb. 4, 2026.
