A United States Postal Service driver has been charged after allegedly attempting to strike a 10-year-old boy with his delivery truck in Florida.

According to reports from WALA, WKRG and the Pensacola News Journal, 41-year-old William White faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, petit theft and criminal mischief following an incident that occurred on Saturday, Dec. 27, in Escambia County.

Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol say White mistakenly delivered a package to the wrong home on Kingfisher Way. The child who lives at that address noticed the package was intended for a different residence. Trying to help, the boy placed the package on his electric scooter and began riding it toward the correct address.

Authorities say White saw the boy with the package and believed the child was stealing it. According to the Highway Patrol’s report, White then intentionally drove the USPS truck toward the child, striking and running over the scooter. The boy managed to escape into a nearby yard moments before the scooter was hit.

After stopping the vehicle, White allegedly pulled the scooter from underneath the truck, loaded it onto the USPS vehicle and yelled at the child before driving away. A relative of the boy followed the postal truck to confront White, at which point investigators say he threw the scooter into another nearby yard.

White was interviewed by authorities and arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 31, when he reported to work. He was later booked into the Escambia County Jail and released after posting a $5,500 bond, according to jail records.

In a statement to the Pensacola News Journal, the U.S. Postal Service confirmed it is investigating the incident in cooperation with local law enforcement.

“The U.S. Postal Service takes the safety and well-being of our customers and employees seriously,” the agency said. “The Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is actively investigating this issue in partnership with local law enforcement. We can confirm that the individual has been employed since 2025. The Postal Service does not publicly comment on personnel matters.”

The case remains under investigation.
