Sydney, Australia – December 14, 2025

A festive Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s famed Bondi Beach descended into panic and fear on Sunday evening after a shooting erupted near a large public gathering, sending crowds fleeing for safety.

The incident unfolded at around 6:40 p.m. local time near the Bondi Pavilion and the northern end of the beach, where a large crowd had assembled for Chanukah by the Sea, an annual event organized by Chabad of Bondi. The open-air celebration, which traditionally includes music, family activities and a public menorah lighting, was marking the first night of the Jewish festival.

According to witness accounts, two men dressed in black opened fire from an elevated position, believed to be a pedestrian bridge or nearby parking area. Attendees reported hearing a rapid burst of gunfire — estimates ranged from a dozen shots to more than 50 — triggering immediate chaos as people ran in all directions. Some sought refuge in nearby homes, restaurants and shops, while others dropped to the ground amid the confusion.

New South Wales Police quickly declared a “developing incident” and urged the public to avoid the area and remain indoors. A major emergency response followed, with police units, ambulances, helicopters and specialist officers converging on the beachfront.

By later in the evening, police confirmed that two suspects had been taken into custody, though the operation was still ongoing. Authorities stressed that the situation remained fluid. Footage shared online showed frantic scenes, with sirens echoing through the area and paramedics treating injured people on the pavement.

The exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed. NSW Ambulance and several media reports indicated that at least 10 people were injured, some in critical condition. Other unverified reports suggested possible fatalities, though police have urged the public and media to rely only on confirmed information.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing,” saying emergency services were working under extremely difficult circumstances to save lives. NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed those sentiments, calling the reports “deeply distressing” and pledging full support for the investigation.

Given the timing and location of the attack, community leaders have raised concerns that the shooting may have deliberately targeted the Jewish event. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry expressed grave alarm, noting the symbolic significance of the gathering on the first night of Hanukkah. Police have not yet confirmed a motive.

Authorities emphasized that there were no reports of related incidents elsewhere in Sydney and warned against the spread of speculation and rumors while the investigation continues.

Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most iconic public spaces, was placed under lockdown as officers secured the area and conducted searches. What is normally a place of summer celebration and community has now become the focus of a major criminal investigation.

This remains a developing story. Further updates are expected as police release confirmed details about the victims, suspects and motive behind the attack.
