Former college football coach Sherrone Moore appeared in a Michigan courtroom on Jan. 22 for a probable cause hearing, arriving hand in hand with his wife, Kelli Moore.

Moore, 39, did not address the court. His attorney, Ellen Michaels, requested a 30-day adjournment to obtain additional records, including the accuser’s phone data and Title IX-related documents from Moore’s former employer, the University of Michigan. Michaels told the judge the records could contain statements and evidence that may call the accuser’s credibility into question.

The prosecution did not oppose the request, and the hearing was rescheduled for March 19.

A separate hearing is scheduled for Feb. 17 regarding a defense motion to quash Moore’s arrest warrant. The warrant remains active, allowing law enforcement to arrest Moore or search his property if probable cause exists. If quashed, that authority would be removed.

Moore was arraigned last month on one felony count of third-degree home invasion and two misdemeanor counts of stalking and breaking and entering.

The charges stem from an incident on Dec. 10, the same day Moore was fired from his position at the University of Michigan. Authorities allege Moore confronted a university staff member with whom he had been in a romantic relationship inside her residence and refused to leave.

According to testimony from a Pittsfield Township police detective at a prior hearing, the woman’s attorney contacted emergency dispatch and reported that Moore was inside her client’s home and attacking her. The attorney also alleged that Moore had been stalking the woman for months and had a history of domestic violence, claims Moore denied.

Moore acknowledged to police that he had been in an intimate relationship with the staff member for approximately two years. The woman told officers she ended the relationship on Dec. 8 and informed Moore she did not want further contact. Police testified that Moore repeatedly called and texted her over the following two days.

The woman told responding officers that Moore’s arrival at her home left her terrified and traumatized.

Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County jail on the night of Dec. 10 and released two days later following his initial court appearance. His wife posted bail. The couple has three children.

Beyond the criminal case, Moore has lost his job and the remaining $12.3 million guaranteed under his contract. The university terminated him for cause, citing a violation of a policy that strongly discourages romantic relationships between supervisors and subordinates unless the relationship is disclosed and formally managed to prevent abuse of power or coercion.

It remains unclear whether Moore will challenge the university’s decision or how the case will proceed following the upcoming hearings.
