The Miami Dolphins plan to bench quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals and start rookie Quinn Ewers instead, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The decision marks at least a temporary end to Tagovailoa’s run as Miami’s starting quarterback and could signal significant changes for the franchise heading into the offseason. Head coach Mike McDaniel expressed frustration following the Dolphins’ 28–15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, calling Tagovailoa’s recent performance unacceptable. Over his last four appearances, the former first-round pick has averaged fewer than 200 passing yards per game while throwing just three touchdowns against two interceptions.

Ewers will make his first NFL start against a Cincinnati defense that has struggled in recent weeks. While the matchup appears favorable on paper, the quarterback change introduces uncertainty for Miami’s key offensive players, including running back De’Von Achane, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and tight end Darren Waller, whose production could fluctuate with a rookie under center.

Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract last summer, which includes $54 million in guaranteed money for the 2026 season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Despite that financial commitment, the benching raises real questions about his long-term future with the team. League sources believe the Dolphins could explore alternative options at quarterback during the offseason.

For the remainder of the regular season, it is possible that Zach Wilson will serve as the backup to Ewers, with Tagovailoa potentially relegated to third-string duties for Miami’s final three games.
