A 15-month-old baby boy has died after being discovered “covered in blood” inside a New York City home, authorities said.

The child was found unconscious and unresponsive inside a residence on 157th Street in Jamaica, Queens, at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, according to an NYPD spokesperson who spoke with PEOPLE. Police responded to the location following a report of an assault.

Inside the home, officers also encountered a 28-year-old woman who had slash wounds on her wrists, the spokesperson said.

Both the baby and the woman were transported to Jamaica Hospital. The child was later pronounced dead, while the woman was listed in stable condition.

At this time, the baby’s cause of death has not been determined. A police source told PEOPLE that the child did not have stab wounds or signs of blunt force trauma.

The source added that the blood found on the child may have belonged to the woman, who was confirmed to be the baby’s mother.

The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to formally determine how the child died.

As of 5:30 p.m. on Monday, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident, police said.
